Our Story:
Hello, My name is Michelle and I am the sole owner of HauLava. Not only am I an owner I am a Mother, a Sister, a Daughter, a Friend and a women who has always dreamed of someday owning my own business. I wanted to share this story with you because I think it is important to know a little bit about me and what I represent.

This is how it all began…… One day about 2 years ago I was watching (actually….listening) to my favorite Morning show (ABC’s Good Morning America) as I got ready for work. This was a typical day…wake up at 6am get ready for work, make my son Breakfast, slam a cup of coffee and run out the door to get my son to school on time meanwhile fighting traffic the whole way to get to work by 8am. As I listened to the program I heard them speaking about Women Entrepreneurs and how to start a business for under $5K. It caught my eye….you see I have been a single Mom working two jobs since my son was 2 years old, constantly struggling to make ends meet. I had always dreamed of someday owning my own business but did not think it could ever be possible until I saw this show. So I sat and listened to the whole program….wondering the entire time how I could do this. As I made my way out the door, dropped my son off at school and sat in traffic it came to me….. You see back three years earlier I had saved up enough money to take a trip to Hawaii. Something I had always dreamed about. I remembered while I was there I had come across the most beautiful Flowers. They were amazing…they were actually growing out of the Lava from the land. It was at that moment I knew what I was suppose to do. I was supposed to start my own business. And that is how it all began. With lots of hard work and research, I manage to pull some finances together and started what is now known as HauLava.

I bet you are wondering how I came up with the name….well here it is. The plants brought me happiness and I wanted them to bring my customers happiness too so I named it Hau (meaning Happy) and Lava (which they grow out of) HauLava.

I hope you have enjoyed reading how it all began….if you have a story to share about how your Haulava plant has brought you happiness I would love to hear about it.

Please write to: Haulava@yahoo.com

Special Thanks to all my friends and family who have been there to support me and never allowed me to give up…..it is because of you all that I am what I am today!

God Bless!

Michelle

Tips & Recipes to Host a Hawaiian Luau Anywhere!

Buy Hawaii theme invitations or create your own luau invitations using Hawaiian words and phrases.
Buy Hawaii theme invitations or create your own luau invitations using Hawaiian words and phrases.
Encourage your luau guests wear Aloha Attire.
Loose orchids are great for female guests who can easily put them in the hair using bobby pins. To wear more than one orchid we recommend using a toothpick to skewer and arrange the orchids then use bobby pins to put the arrangement in the hair. The island tradition is if you are single the flower should be worn behind the right ear and if you are taken then the flower should be worn behind the left ear.
Have loose orchids, lei needles, and string for your guests to create their own neck, wrist, or head leis. This is fun for people of all ages!
Create name badges or place cards for the luau attendees with their English and/or Hawaiian names.
If you enjoy cookie making and decorating you can create adorable Hawaii theme cookies then decorate them with the luau attendees English and/or Hawaiian names and use the cookies a place cards.
Fill a plastic or blow up kiddy pool with ice and keep your canned and bottled beverages in it.
Serve punch, salads, candied pineapple, macadamia nuts, or other buffet items in large sea shells or beach pails.
If this is a party for a little girl have the guest of honor dress in a Hawaiian Hula Princess outfit.
Set the mood with coconut scented candles in coconut shells.
Create an island atmosphere at your luau by string up strands of fresh orchids around the hall, house, garden, etc.
Have fresh, sweet, delicious papaya from Hawaii at your luau! They are great sliced into spears and served on their own or cut into cubes and put into a fruit salad. Fresh papaya also makes a great salsa! Fresh papaya from Hawaii tastes great and is excellent for your digestive system. It is the perfect complement to any luau!
Have fresh pineapples at your luau! Tip: Leaving the skin on cut the top off then cute each pineapple into quarters length wise. You can then cut the quarter into portions but don't cut it all the way through the skin. The skin will act as a serving bowl and each quarter can be put on a table. Those who want some can easily break off a single serving portion.
Create Pineapple Boats from fresh pineapples from Hawaii. Take a whole pineapple with the skin and top still on and cut it in half lengthwise. Scoop/cut out the pineapple meat leaving the skin and top. Then fill each pineapple half with the pineapple pieces and other fruits like sliced banana, apples slices, grapes, strawberries, etc.
Serve poi, a starch food that typically accompanies an authentic Hawaiian luau. It's good with the Kalua pig and laulau. Poi is mad from pounded taro and can be compared to having mashed potatoes with a meal. Poi is much healthier than potatoes and was one of the important foods that sustained ancient Hawaiians.
